Short Thoughts from 1 John 4:7-12

“No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”

I (Luke) was reading this passage this morning and this verse stuck out to me. Particularly that phrase “made complete in us.” John had just finished talking about how God displayed his love to us by sending his one and only Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. And as I thought about it I realized what John is saying is that if you stop there, God’s love is incomplete. That seems weird because the Father made such an incredible display of his love towards us in that single act of sending his Son to the cross.

BUT there was more in his heart! He desired people to first encounter his love and then out of a response to love other people. Only then was his love actually complete or finished. Until God’s love so radically touches me that I am compelled to love my brother then God’s love will be incomplete; half finished like a painting outlined but lacking color.
