5 Months Today

Today is the 5 month marker of being married! It’s significant because so far our relationship has developed in very distinct 5 month increments. We dated for 5 months from December 2011 to May 2012. We got engaged almost 5 months to the day on May 23rd. We were then engaged for 5 months culminating at our wedding on October 6th. Now it’s 2013 and we’ve been married for a solid 5 months.

I’m going to try to give a one word summary for each of those time periods:

Dating – Exciting!

Engagement – S  l  o  w

5 months of marriage – Transition

Feel free to try this exercise and put your summary in the comments.

Marriage is so good, but man what a transition. Everything changed so fast and so dramatically my head has been spinning trying to get some perspective. Finally, about a week ago, some light burst through the clouds of the fogginess of my mind.

I was journaling on a Sunday afternoon and I said to myself, “Self, you know this is the most (read “THE- pause- MOST- pause-”) change you have ever gone through. Moving off to college was a big change, but not this much change. Starting working full time was a big change, but not this big. Literally every part of your life has changed.”

And somehow that conversation helped.

We’re just figuring all this stuff out still. You don’t learn how to be married and adjust to married life overnight. It’s okay if it takes some time to settle in.

So here’s to the first 5 months of marriage, to love and humility and service.

  1. I’ve been married for almost a year and a half now… Honestly, I thought marriage was going to be A LOT harder than it is. But, I’m still waiting for it to get “hard”… Nevermind, I hope that never happens! I love being married & it was an awesome, worthwhile, positive change.

  2. I’ve been married for negative 22 years and eternity past now and I can say it has all been transition.

There’s my negative 22 and eternity past cents.
